Okay but I REALLY LIKE the “Scott is the RA” one, like Lydia lives on a co-ed floor and Scott and Erica are the RAs. And they do floor meetings together so everyone is all crammed in the common room, and that’s how Lydia first meets Scott.
She doesn’t pay much attention to him because it’s pretty clear he’s one of those sunshiney good boys who bored her so much in high school, and there are a lot of very attractive distractions sitting around the common room. (Lydia makes good use of those distractions the first semester.)
But maybe something happens, maybe she’s super stressed during finals week or her physics class ends up being much harder than she anticipated or what have you, and there are so many people in the dorm rooms and Lydia just wants to be alone, which is how she ends up in the common room in her pajamas, curled up on one of the couches and trying not to cry.
To her surprise, someone sets a hot mug on the coffee table in front of her.
She looks up to see Scott, giving her a crooked smile.
“Want some company?” he asks.
“Not really,” Lydia says.
To her surprise, he just nods. “Okay. I’ll be back in the RA room if you need anything. Or I can get Erica, if you’d prefer. Just let me know, okay? But the tea is yours.”
He raises his own mug to her and then actually leaves.
Lydia sits there, a little taken aback, because she’d expected him to ignore her wishes and stay. But he’d taken her at her word and left, like all he really wanted to do was give her support if she wanted it.
And that’s…unexpected.
She returns the mug to him the next night. “Sorry about that,” she says. “The results of my physics midterm were less than ideal.”
Scott winces. “Ouch. Let me guess. You have Porter?”
Lydia nods. “Indeed I do.”
“His midterms and finals are brutal,” Scott says. “I had him last year. I had to get a tutor to survive. Actually,” he grabs his phone, “I’ve got her number still, if you want?”
Lydia would normally say no, but much as she hates to admit it, she does need the help. “Sure. Thank you.”
And that’s how Lydia meets Kira, who is absolutely stellar at physics, and Scott keeps checking in on her to see how things are going. But that’s all he does, check in on her, and Lydia’s so used to having guys wanting more that it completely boggles her mind that he doesn’t.
And somewhere during the last half of the semester, Lydia finds herself going from confused, to intrigued, to perhaps…a little attracted.
And when she aces her physics final that semester, she invites Scott and Kira out to celebrate. Kira can’t make it, but Scott does. And so it’s just Lydia and Scott enjoying coffee, talking, and the next thing Lydia knows they’re walking back to the dorms hours after they left and it feels suspiciously like a date.
It surprises her how much she wants it to be.
So she takes a deep breath, takes Scott’s hand, and asks, “So, would you like to go get coffee again sometime?”
Scott pauses, and for one heart-stopping minute, Lydia’s convinced he’s going to say no.
Instead, he gives her that same crooked smile she’s come to love, and says, “Yeah. I’d really like to.”
