Summary: A prison ship. Her grandfather had thrown Erica on a prison ship, for the simple crime of loving her. And then he'd locked Allison up in this little tower room with the hope that she'd "come to her senses."

Allison sank to the floor, tears streaming down her face. Her throat was raw from screaming, her hands bruised from banging at the door with all her strength. She'd searched the room a dozen times for a way out, but there was nothing—just the single door, which was bolted fast, and a narrow window far too high and small to aid an escape.
She buried her face in her hands. A prison ship. Her grandfather had thrown Erica on a prison ship, for the simple crime of loving her. And then he'd locked Allison up in this little tower room with the hope that she'd "come to her senses."
How could she? Nothing had made sense until Erica had become a part of her life. And now Erica was gone, and if Allison couldn't get out of here, she'd never see her again.
She slammed her fist against the door one more time for good measure.
Something scraped at the window as if in response.
Allison frowned, positive she'd misheard. But no, it happened again, something scratching at the stone.
What in the world was at the window all the way up here?
She hurried over and peered through the narrow opening, but she could see nothing. "Hello?"
A mess of curly blond hair popped into view, and Erica grinned. "Good evening, Princess."
"Eri—" Allison clapped her hand over her mouth so she wouldn't risk alerting the guards. When she could speak again, she did so much more quietly. "Erica? What are you doing here? How did you even—how are you up here?!"
"Well," Erica glanced down, "I found a very good friend with a very tall ladder who owed me a very big favor."
"Not anymore I don't," came a distant shout.
Erica shushed them and turned back to Allison. "I hoped to get you out of here, but even with my skills, this is a bit too narrow."
Allison shook her head. "Don't worry about me. You've got to get out of here before somebody sees you. If Grandfather finds out that you've escaped the prison ship..."
"Believe me, I'm aware," Erica said grimly. "His Majesty isn't the only one with a vested interest in me disappearing."
"Someone in the guild?"
Erica nodded. "I'm not sure who, but someone betrayed me. I may have made it off the ship, but I can't stay in the city. I've got to leave tonight."
It wrenched Allison's heart in two to hear. At least Erica was leaving of her own accord, rather than in the bowels of a prison ship. She reached through the narrow opening to touch Erica's cheek. "Would that I was going with you."
Erica leaned into Allison's hand and kissed her palm. "I will come back. As soon as it's safe, as soon as I can, I'll come back for you."
Allison brushed her thumb across Erica's cheek. "I will be waiting."
"Erica!" the voice at the bottom of the ladder hissed.
"I'll be right there!" Erica hissed back, and then she raised her eyes to Allison. "Princess—Allison—"
Allison shook her head. "I understand. You have no more time." She reluctantly drew her hand away, and then impulsively undid her necklace, a locket her mother had given her years ago. "Here. Take this."
Erica's eyes widened. "I can't—"
"You can." Allison thrust the locket out to her. "Please. To remember me."
Erica finally took the locket and kissed it. "As if I could forget. I love you."
Allison's throat had closed. She could scarcely breathe, let alone speak. "And I love you," she choked out anyway.
Erica gazed at her, her eyes flicking across Allison's face, and Allison studied her face in return, memorizing everything she could.
And then Erica vanished back down the ladder.
Allison listened to her descent until Erica passed beyond her hearing, and then she leaned against the wall and hugged herself in a pathetic attempt to soothe her aching heart.
Erica was alive. Erica was alive and had escaped the prison ship, and even though she had to leave the city, Allison would wait. Erica would come back.
They would find each other again.
