An anon asked me for Tiger & Bunny headcanons, which filled me with no small amount of glee. Originally posted to Tumblr here.
Anonymous asked: Do you have any Tiger and Bunny headcanons? I've seen so few because the fandom is so small. Compared to others at least.
You, a sweet unsuspecting anon: Do you have any Tiger & Bunny headcanons?
Me, who has spent at least 75% of her waking moments since October 2017 thinking about these characters: …a few, yes.
Let’s see how long this gets, shall we? XD (Also, you can play “spot the headcanon M has actually put into a fic!”)
Answer: apparently it got to be over 1000 words so I’m going to put some of it under a read more and stop there for the time being. XD
FAIR WARNING for the people who haven’t seen the whole series: the last two headcanons contain spoilers, one of which is pretty significant. (I’ve marked them.)
Anywhoozle, here they are:
- Barnaby is gay and/or grey-ace. I’m not entirely sure how you would classify it but I feel like he’s exclusively attracted to men but doesn’t experience sexual attraction much. It’s one of the many, many reasons Kotetsu surprises him (or rather, he’s surprised that he’s attracted to Kotetsu).
- Kotetsu is demisexual, but it takes him awhile to figure out that he’s attracted to Barnaby because he seriously never expected to find that again, and it’s also different from what he felt before with Tomoe.
- Barnaby is kind of terrible at kissing because he’s never done anything before he and Kotetsu get together. He gets better quickly because he’s a fast learner, but he hates not being perfect at something on the first try. Kotetsu thinks it’s hilarious (not that Barnaby’s bad at kissing, but that he’s so ticked about not being good at it right off the bat), but he has absolutely zero problems with helping Barnaby practice.
- Kotetsu starts learning how to cook something other than fried rice because he wants to make some of Barnaby’s favorite foods.
- Barnaby gets vaguely irritated whenever anyone else calls Kotetsu “old man.” (That’s his old man, thank you very much.)
- Kotetsu is a cuddly drunk. He’s touchy-feely normally, but if he’s been drinking? God help the person who’s standing closest to him, which is usually Barnaby. (More than once, he’s had Antonio drive him to Barnaby’s apartment so Kotetsu can give him a hug good night.)
- Kaede and Barnaby get along fabulously, and Kotetsu is simultaneously relieved (because they’re the two most important people in his life, and he wants them to get along) and terrified (because they will 100% gang up on him and his ability to say no to both of them in those situations is about zero).
- Barnaby is the one who has to ask Kotetsu out, because though Kotetsu starts trying to clumsily court him, it never occurs to him that Barnaby reciprocates his feelings and so he’ll never actually make a move. It takes Barnaby longer than he would care to admit to figure this out.
- Barnaby doesn’t know how to tie a tie. Kotetsu is utterly appalled to learn this and ties his ties for him, all the while ranting about how Barnaby needs to learn to do it for himself. Barnaby knows how to tie it properly after about the third time of watching Kotetsu do it, but continues to pretend he doesn’t because he likes Kotetsu tying it for him. (And although Kotetsu grumbles, he likes tying them for Barnaby as well.)
- Barnaby really likes to pull Kotetsu in for a kiss by his tie and/or his suspenders. Kotetsu likes it a lot more than he would publicly admit.
- Kotetsu loves to play with Barnaby’s hair. Barnaby was unaware how much he liked having his hair played with, but there you go.
- When they move in together, they move into Kotetsu’s apartment, partly because it’s cheaper and partly because Kotetsu has too much crap to move and Barnaby’s apartment can be completely packed over the course of a weekend. (They keep Barnaby’s bed, though.)
- Once they’re moved in together, the line of photos on Kotetsu’s shelf gets updated to include the picture of Barnaby’s parents, plus a few pictures of Barnaby and Kotetsu together (and two of the both of them and Kaede). When he has a bad day, Kotetsu likes to stand there and look at all the pictures together.
- Kotetsu likes to leave love bites. Barnaby generally doesn’t mind, but he eventually has to institute a strict “no hickeys before photo shoots” rule.
- After they start sharing a bed, Barnaby discovers that he really enjoys cuddling and it gets to the point that he can’t sleep well if Kotetsu’s not there. Kotetsu leaves for two days to go help his mother with something, and when he gets back, Barnaby practically drags him to bed so he can get some sleep.
- They don’t actually say “I love you” very often. They typically say it in other ways–with fond looks and the things they do for each other or just in the tone when they say each other’s names–but the words themselves they say very rarely, and usually just when it’s the two of them.
- They’ve been dating for several weeks before they have sex for the first time. It doesn’t occur to Barnaby that it’s a Thing to do and while Kotetsu would like to do it, he isn’t sure whether Barnaby wants to and he’s not going to push him into doing something he doesn’t want to (besides, Kotetsu is perfectly happy with the way things are). It’s not until Nathan mentions something that Barnaby realizes it’s probably something he and Kotetsu need to talk about.
- Kotetsu is generally more romantic, Barnaby is generally more frank. Kotetsu’s the one who will spend his time crafting a secret romantic dinner, or surprise Barnaby with champagne and strawberries after work. Barnaby will text him in the middle of the day with “Do you want to go to the bluffs after dinner tonight and make out?” (Kotetsu has more than once walked into a pole or a wall when Barnaby texted him something unexpected.)
- I say “generally” because occasionally Barnaby will decide to do something romantic for Kotetsu, which involves literal days of planning because whatever he does has to be absolutely perfect (because it’s for Kotetsu, obviously). Kotetsu could not care less if something is perfect because he knows how much effort Barnaby puts into things, and he’s smitten every time, no matter how the Thing actually turns out.
- The longer he’s dead, the more Maverick’s powers start to fade, which means Barnaby slowly starts to get back other memories. They range from minor things to fairly major ones, and the minor ones Barnaby can handle okay (although he usually needs some time to himself to recover), but the major ones leave him shaken enough that he holes up at home and won’t answer his phone for anyone but Kotetsu. When it’s been one of those days, Kotetsu shows up with dinner and then comes in to lie down with Barnaby until he’s ready to get up again.
- After she finishes school, Kaede moves to Stern Bild to be a hero as well, and so Tiger & Barnaby go from being a duo to a trio. Her hero name would be Copycat, as a nod to her powers and continuing the family tradition of feline-related names. Agnes gets a few dozen more gray hairs the first season Kaede’s involved, because she is almost as reckless as Kotetsu. The ratings are fantastic, though.
