Voltron: Legendary Defender Headcanons
Not really a not!fic, but a bunch of headcanons that an anon asked for on Tumblr. And, you know, since the last season debuts on Friday, I figure now's a good time to move them over. Originally posted here.
Anonymous asked: Do you have any head canons on the paladins or other VLD characters?
WHY YES I DO. Let’s do this:
- Hunk is ace, Pidge is ace/aro. That’s the biggest reason for the appalled look they share when Sam’s like “ah, modulation arguments. That’s how your mother and I met!” Pidge hasn’t actually defined herself yet; she’s just so focused on computers and new technology that she can’t fathom being interested in anything else. Hunk kind of figured himself out at Galaxy Garrison when he realized that Lance spent so much time chasing girls while Hunk didn’t and didn’t really want to.
- Hunk loves Disney movies and owns damn near every one ever made and his Lion’s playlist is filled with Disney songs. It’s one of the things he and Lance bonded over when they first got to know each other, although Lance tries to deny it.
- Hunk’s grandmother was a professional chef, his father is a baker, and his mother is a mathematician and loves to cook. He grew up around a big, talkative family that was always experimenting in the kitchen, trying new things and putting twists on old classics. Every time they went to a restaurant, they’d all come back home and try to recreate whatever dish they had. (Sometimes it worked, sometimes…not so much.) His parents also fostered kids, so Hunk got used to having new faces around and reaching out to make them feel welcome–usually with cookies.
- Hunk was at the Galaxy Garrison not because he wants to go into space, but because he wanted to be on the cutting edge of the scientific & engineering advancements that were being made. He was kind of hoping to avoid the whole space thing but OH WELL here we are.
- I go back and forth on my post-VLD headcanon for Hunk. Originally I wanted him opening a restaurant (IN SPACE) with Shay, but after season 6 I’m leaning more toward him becoming Earth’s liaison with other alien races. He ends up hosting huge dinner parties at his house on a regular basis because getting humans and aliens to bond over great food is the first step toward diplomacy.
- Allura gets to Earth and discovers the futuristic version of Ulta/Sephora and just about loses her mind with all the makeup and hair stuff. She absolutely adores trying out new makeup styles and develops a special fondness for glittery eyeshadows. She tries to get Pidge to sit for a makeover, but Pidge has zero patience for getting her makeup done. Romelle, however, is more than happy to try out all this new Earth stuff, even if she’s not quite as into it as Allura is.
- Allura and Colleen Holt get along smashingly well (because the Holts invite Allura and Coran to stay with them while they’re on Earth). Pidge is actually kind of terrified by it.
- Like Hunk, Allura becomes a diplomat post-VLD, as the Altean ambassador to Earth. She goes to every one of his dinner parties, even if she doesn’t have to, because the food is delicious and because she and Hunk can share stories of their time as paladins to help put everyone at ease.
- Coran was 100% in love with Alfor and he never told anyone about it. He’s the first one to realize that Keith and Shiro are pining for each other because he remembers what that was like, and so he does his best to subtly (or, you know, “subtly”) give them opportunities to be alone together so that they’ll realize their feelings.
- Shockingly, Pidge and Hunk are the only two who realize what Coran’s doing and join in on it because hey, the sooner Keith and Shiro hook up, the sooner they can give them loads and loads of shit about it. (Once a younger sibling, always a younger sibling.)
- HOWEVER, since Keith and Shiro have 1) never had younger siblings and 2) have absolutely zero shame about how into each other they are, this does not go quite the way Pidge and Hunk planned.
Pidge: Oooo, are you calling your boooooyfriend?
Keith: Of course. We’re going to dinner later. Did you know it’s our three-month anniversary? Do you think I should wear a tie?
Pidge: I… *sighs* yeah, Keith, you should wear a tie.
- After VLD, Keith and Shiro get a ship and go traveling the stars together, exploring new planets and meeting new races like they both wanted to do before everything happened. Later, Pidge and Matt join them, because Matt loves exploration and Pidge is always seeking new technology and new knowledge. They have a blast traveling together and making all kinds of discoveries without the stress of being in an intergalactic war. They still come back to Earth regularly to catch up with the others and so Pidge and Matt can visit their parents.
- Lance stays at Galaxy Garrison, training the next generation of Voltron paladins. He adores being the center of attention and sharing all the stories from piloting Voltron with the new cadets, who hang onto his every word. Plus, he gets to see Allura on a regular basis, and she is always more than happy to correct some of the more…outlandish tales Lance shares with the kids.
